25th:
Seems to be a sudden emerges of the Chalkhill Blue, in the last few days I have seen: 323 at Houghton Regis Chalk Pits on Fri 22nd, 225 at Hexton Chalk Pit NR on Sun 24th, 353 at Sharpenhoe Moleskin Hill either side of the road Sun 24th, 23 at Sharpenhoe Clappers the slope facing the A6 Sun 24th, 96 at Sharpenhoe Moleskin the lower field to the west of car park on sun 24th. The Marbled Whites have now almost disappeared just ones and twos around. Dark Green Fritillaries have now almost finished only 9 seen at Sharpenhoe. (PG)

6th:
15 species, including several White Admiral, Purple Hairstreak, a single Silver-washed Fritillary and a Painted Lady at West Wood. Also a Hummingbird Hawkmoth on the outskirts of the wood (IW).

5th:
A male Purple Emperor photographed drinking suspected dog-urine at Stockgrove Country Park today, the first sighting in the King's Wood Heath and Reach area this year? (BH).

A male Silver-washed Fritillary in Wilstead Wood and two in College Wood, where there was also a White Admiral and a White-letter Hairstreak (KB).

Concensus from several observers was that probably four different male Purple Emperors were seen by them in Chicksands Wood today, plus several new Comma and Red Admiral, 4 Silver-washed Fritillary and a White Admiral (AM, CC, PC, JT).

4th:
A male Silver-washed Fritillary turned up in a north Bedford garden having probably also been in the nearby cemetery shortly before (two observers). Also, a Marbled White seen in Brickhill allotments - a new site (BA & YA).

3rd:
A fresh male Silver-washed Fritillary and possibly two others in Potton Wood (IW).

8 Comma, 1 Marbled White, 3 Red Admiral, Ringlets, Small Skippers, 6 Small White and Speckled Woods and one Purple Emperor in Chicksands Wood (PP).

1 Comma, 1 Green-veined White, 1m Purple Emperor and 2 Red Admirals in Chicksands/Pedley Wood. The PE was not far from the southern monument. (CG, DB).

18 fresh Green-veined White on the Old Warden Tunnel transects suggest the 2nd brood has now started (KB).

2 Comma, 1 Common Blue, 5+ Gatekeeper, 5+ Large Skipper, 20+ Large White, 20+ Meadow Brown, 2 Purple Hairstreak, 22 Ringlet, 1 Small Copper, Small Skipper, 3 Speckled Wood and 2 White-letter Hairstreak in the Deepdale/Carthagena Road/Deepdale Quarry area (DOM,JD).

2nd:
Between 1 and 3 Silver-washed Fritillary in Chicksands Wood in the afternoon but no Purple Emperors or White Admirals (IW).

A Silver-washed Fritillary in Marston Thrift (MP).

3 Comma, 2 Green-veined White, 2 Large Skipper, 1 Large White, 4 Meadow Brown, 50+ Ringlet, 1m Silver-washed Fritillary, 1 Small Skipper and 3 White Admiral in West Wood (MH).

11 Small Tortoiseshells at a patch of nettle and creeping thistles on Whipsnade Downs were nice to see (KB).

1st:
5 Silver-washed Fritillary including one of the form valezina in College Wood. White Admiral and White-letter Hairstreak also present. (MP, SB, MW)

2 Silver-washed Fritillaries reported on a buddleia and sunbathing in the last couple of days in a garden east of Sandy (FW).


June 2011

30th:
A mating pair of Silver-washed Fritillary and a male Purple Emperor all near the northern monument in Chicksands Wood (DS).

29th:
The first Chalkhill Blue was sighted today on the Sharpenhoe Clappers transect, about ten days earlier than usual. Over the whole transect 88 Dark Green Fritillaries were counted (DC).

Approximately a dozen Silver-washed Fritillaries were seen today in College Wood Northill, including a pair. Four or five visible simultaneously (AM).

A male Purple Emperor near the northern monument at Chicksands Wood 11.15 to 11.35, and earlier a mating pair of Silver-washed Fritillaries in the same area (DS et al).

11 sp. of butterfly seen by The Lodge staff during lunchtime including: White-letter Hairstreak, 3 (MAW only), at the Deepdale end of the reserve, plus Purple Hairstreak (2), Ringlet (10+), Brown Argus, Marbled White (15+), Small Skipper (2+) and Large Skipper (3+) nearby. (MW & DOM)

In amongst the numerous Meadow Brown were at least 4 Small Copper, Ringlet and Red Admiral (IH).

27th:
About a dozen Marbled White near the small reservoirs on the southern edge of Thurleigh Airport (RB).

At least 6 White-letter Hairstreak, 2 White Admiral and 2 Silver-washed Fritillary one of the latter coming down for moisture/salts on the gravel at the entrance to the wood, giving great views, all at College Wood, Northill (ME).

A male Purple Emperor on the ground near the northern monument at 4:30pm (RL).

26th:
1 male Purple Emperor on the ground on and off for an hour (11:40-12:40) near the northern monument of Chicksands Wood. Photos suggest it was only one, though two were suspected at the time. Also a Silver-washed Fritillary east of the southern monument, probably a male by the way it was hurtling along the ride (KB).

2 Small Tortoiseshell, 1m Large White and a late season male Orange Tip near Warden Hill (BE & VE).

10+ Large Skipper, 50+ Meadow Brown, 50+ Ringlet and 5 Marbled White at Fancott Woods and Meadows SSSI (SB & BN)

22nd:
Following the BC/BNHS field trip to Marston Thrift GW remained behind to look further and was rewarded with a five-minute close-up encounter with a battered Black Hairstreak, which hadn't been seen by anyone in the groups earlier (GW).

21st:
1 White Admiral, 1 Marbled White and 1 White-letter Hairstreak, plus several Red Admiral and Comma at Chicksands Wood (IW).

2 Dark Green Fritillary, 6 Marbled White, 2 Red Admiral, 2 Small Heath and 2 Speckled Wood at Sharpenhoe Clappers (SP).

19th:
One quite battered White-letter Hairstreak east of Stewartby (SB).

1 Essex Skipper at Knocking Hoe (EC).

3 Comma, Large Skipper, Marbled White, Meadow Brown, 4 Ringlet, 2 Small White, 2 Speckled Wood and 5 White-letter Hairstreak on footpath from Sutton Mill Road to Carthagena Road, Potton. On the continuing footpath were 7 Large Skipper, 1 Red Admiral and 5 Marbled White (CC).

18th:
19 Marbled White in fields to the west of Pavenham at a site where not seen before (RB & CB).

14th:
The Carthagena golf course's first Marbled White of the year in the afternoon (ST).

6 White-letter Hairstreak near the southern monument in Chicksands Wood. Small numbers of Speckled Wood, Meadow Brown, Ringlet, Large Skipper, Red Admiral, Comma and Green-veined White also seen. No Purple Emperors yet (IW).

The first sighting of Small Blue on the Sharpenhoe Clappers transect and also Marbled White (DC).

11 Common Blue, 4 Large Skipper, 3 Small/Essex Skipper, 8 Small Heath, 10 Small Blue, 13 Meadow Brown, 6 Ringlet and 2 Marbled White at Kensworth Quarry (PG).

Substantial numbers of Marbled White on the wing - not as in previous years in the wild flower meadow but in the grass areas just inside the reserve entrance. There were also a few Small Skipper, many Large Skipper, loads of Small Heath, Meadow Brown were common, a few Ringlet, and one each of Speckled Wood, Red Admiral, Comma, Common Blue and Small Tortoiseshell at Bromham Lake LNR (AM & TW).

At Bromham Lake NR today were 2 Speckled Wood, 2 Peacocks and 2 Brimstones (CR).

6th:
The first Green Hairstreak was seen on Whipsnade Downs (GH).

Large White has now emerged, first spotted in a Blunham garden (TS) and also around the foot of Wally and Gordon Hills, Luton (VE&BE).

Another first for today Speckled Wood, sighted in Dunstable STW, along with male and female Brimstone, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock and a worn Red Admiral (AW).

Speckled Wood was also sighted in Linslade Wood, together with Holly Blue, 3 Commas, 4 Peacocks and a Small White (RM).

10 Commas, 5 Peacocks, 3 Brimstones, and 16 (Light?) Orange Underwings flying at Marston Thrift. (Some definitely were LOUs). Also a Small/Green-veined White that was pursued for a great distance without revealing its identity! (KB).

12th: "Brimstone Day" included:
One Brimstone in Potton (PC).
Two Brimstones in Stopsley (BE).
One Brimstone in Bedford (GW).
Two Brimstones near Sandy (DK&FK).
One Brimstone in Pegnut Wood, Potton. (DO-M).
But to prove there are other species around:
A Small Tortoiseshell at Cooper's Hill repeatedly retreating into gorse for some reason (KB).
Three Commas chasing each other in a Blunham garden, plus another Brimstone! (TS).
Still no reports of any Peacocks. Given last summer's failure with the new brood, perhaps not too surprising.
