1 Speckled Wood, one unidentified white and one unidentified Nymphalid flying around the canopy in Flitwick Moor during coppice work by Wildlife Trust volunteers.
Comma emerged from pupa in Bedford garden while out volunteering, so no pics (KB).

1 Small Tortoiseshell, 1 Small/Green-veined White, 2 Red Admiral, 5 Speckled Wood, 1 Peacock during a walk in the Maulden area (CG).

Also an interesting emergence today of a Large White from a pupa on a wall, having fed on nasturtiums. This may be a third brood, or possibly the offspring of a migrant out of sync with UK broods (AP).

Only the third report of a Painted Lady, in Luton (DW).

Up to 3 Silver-washed Fritillary, 3 White-letter Hairstreak and 1 immaculate male Purple Emperor obligingly sat feasting on something unpleasant by the track for about an hour, and was seen by 7 people. Eventually it drifted upwards and eventually settled out of sight in an oak tree. No White Admirals or Purple Hairstreaks. (IW et al.)

Tim Sharrock reports from his Blunham garden: "15 degrees and suddenly there are butterflies all over the garden. Highlight (by far) a WALL sunning on a low laurel hedge and watched through binoculars. Walls were regular here in the late 1970s and 1980s (mostly in July/August, if my memory is correct), but then vanished and this is the first that I've seen here (indeed, in Bedfordshire) for at least 20 years, though I see them every August in Devon." [None were reported in Beds in 2011 - KB].
At Totternhoe Quarry only a single Duke of Burgundy was found in hours of searching. In the wider Totternhoe Knolls/Totternhoe Lime area were seen 1 Peacock, Orange Tips, Whites, Speckled Woods, a Brimstone and a few Holly Blues. No skippers of any persuasion nor any green hairstreaks. This was probably my least productive visit here that I can remember! (AM)

Two Red Admirals active in a Blunham garden, neither the tatty one seen there on 24th Feb (TS).
Another Red Admiral in a Clifton garden (SP).
An unidentified butterfly, possibly a Peacock, flashed past a Toddington kitchen window (JP).

1st:
A Brimstone seen in a Campton garden (DB).
A pristine Small Tortoiseshell at Rowney Warren this afternoon (AO).


February 2012

28th:
The first Beds report of a Brimstone in a Luton garden (AG). (There was a report from the Bucks side of the border in Rushmere on 26th Feb, but we have to draw a line somewhere! ;-) ).

24th:
A Red Admiral spotted in the morning in the Riverside area of Priory Country Park (JB).
Another,tatty, Red Admiral in a Blunham garden (TS).

23rd:
A Peacock was sunning itself on logs with occasional flight in Maulden Wood (SC).
A Red Admiral flying constantly in a Linslade garden (RM,GD).



January 2012

11th:
A Red Admiral flying around a garden in Brickhill, Bedford. (AM).
A Red Admiral at The Lodge, Sandy. (WG)
A Red Admiral on the John O'Gaunt golf course, Sutton (MP).

A Small Tortoiseshell flying in Barton, possibly disturbed by nearby building work (IK).

9th:
Another small white larva found on kale in Luton, the latest in a long sequence throughout the winter months. (JF).
